MPRA SCHOLARSHIPS

Academic stoles, gown, cap for graduation ceremonies

The Maui Puerto Rican Association began awarding scholarships in 1982. Scholarships are awarded for post-secondary education in accredited colleges or vocational training institutions. The Association has given 221 awards to 165 scholars of Puerto Rican descent for a total of $152,300.

Criteria

Applicants must be of Puerto Rican ancestry in whole or part and must maintain a permanent residency in the County of Maui, including Moloka'i and Lāna'i. Applicants are required to submit the most recent transcript of grades and two (2) letters of reference from persons other than relatives. Applicants must also submit a one-page essay on their reasons for applying for this scholarship. The By-Laws of the Maui Puerto Rican Association dictate that a scholarship selection subcommittee composed of persons who are not of Puerto Rican descent, nor married to someone of Puerto Rican descent, review the applications and recommend those to be awarded. The Maui Puerto Rican Association membership has the final say on the awards and has always accepted the recommendations as presented.
